Jul 23, 2025Will Running Destroy Your Knees? That's one of the most enduring myths in the fitness world, but the science says otherwise. Research shows that recreational running does not increase the risk of osteoarthritis or long-term knee damage—in fact, it may help strengthen joints by stimulating cartilage repair and maintaining a healthy weight. The repetitive motion of running can actually build resilience in muscles and connective tissues that support the knees, provided it’s done with proper form and training volume.
That said, running isn’t entirely risk-free. Overtraining, poor biomechanics, or inadequate footwear can lead to conditions like runner’s knee (patellofemoral pain syndrome) or IT band syndrome. The key lies in mindful training—gradual mileage increases, strength work for legs and hips, and choosing shoes that match your gait all reduce the chances of injury.
